I personally like my silver jewelry with a patina from age use and wear.
Just rub your items down with a soft cloth every once and a while.
Be careful when cleaning silver jewelry with set stones, make sure the stone will not be affected by any cleaner you use!!!
To more thoroughly clean it use a soft cotton cloth, toothpaste, toothbrush, or fingers and scrub the metal, finish with soap and water. Or use Baking Soda with a wet cloth or a toothbrush and scrub, finish with soap and water.
To get into really cranky areas use a toothpick - the wood is softer than the sterling and will not scratch it.

To slow tarnish down store your silver jewelry in zip lock bags with the little anti-oxidation packets found in medications or vitamins.

And if you absolutly must keep your silver jewelry from tarnishing, you may wish to try an automobile polish like NuFinish2000, after you thoroughly clean it. Use auto polish as you would on your car; wipe it on, let it dry, then buff it off. [Make sure that the product does not contain either Sulfur or Bleach.] Auto products impart a polymer or wax onto the surface which if left alone will last quite a while, if the piece is handled often then re-application will be needed more often. You can also use "Future" Acrylic Floor Polish. It can be used as a dip or a brush on. It works well to apply it to a clean rag/cloth and rub onto the surface. Once dry, it imparts a coating which should last quite a while. Re-application may be necessary after worn a lot.
